Blog 10
Summary:
The National Audit Office said that Dementia services in England are being neglected. Care for dementia patients is still not receiving the priority. Last year the Government unveiled a dementia strategy. The NAO is wondering when the plans become reality. The plans are early diagnoses and better patient and carer support. The Government says that they are working hard, but there is still much more to be done. According the NAO it is not clear were the extra £150m that they would receive how that money will be spent. The Department should give necessary tools to make change happen than the strategy will transform lives.
Reaction:
It appears that many older people faced unnecessary hospital stays or were put into care homes to early cause by a lack of basic training and “patchy “work. Basically, the government promised something but did not make that promise true. I think it is also a problem that needs priority. It seems to me that they are not working very well together and maybe there is a gap between communication, priorities and timetable. But this kind of issues will always be complex because it is a huge issue and many people are involved. But we are talking about people that need help. And I think that is a big priority!

Prison population 'should be cut' by third, say MPs
Blog 9
Summary:
The prison population should be reduced by putting a third of the offenders back on the streets. The current level of the prison population is 84,000 prisoners. The government wanted to spend £4.2billion on building extra prison places in 2014 but that is a mistake. The justice committee said that prison should be the last option. The millions of pounds from the prison system could be put into local public services, like education and drug addiction programmes. Very dangerous people need to be locked up for a very long time. But people who are addicted to drugs of alcohol do not belong in the prison.
Reaction:
I think the cross-party Justice committee is right. low level offenders, drug and alcohol addicts and prisoners with mental illnesses should be helped by another way, their problems do not disappear when they are in jail for a couple of months/years. Though I think they have to be careful and inquire if these people are not dangerous for the society. I think also that they could save money if they make prison live much more severe, no TV, no computers, no mobile phones, basic food. They could also create more capacity if they putting two or more prisoners in each cell.

Snow brings more chaos to UK
blog 8
Summary:
Fresh snow covered many parts of the UK on Wednesday, 13 January 2010. The bad weather has brought the economy to a “standstill” according The Federation of Small Businesses. And it is costing at least £600 million a day. Roads were closed, many airport runways shut and also many schools closed their doors. Hospitals and emergency departments have seen a large increase in people with broken bones. The UK need to be better prepared with more salt stocks for roads. Buiseniss leaders asked for talks between local authorities, schools, transport and salt mining companies and buisenesses to find solutions to deal with the bad weather.
Reaction:
Unfortunately, we did not get that much snow in the Netherlands. I know that it is bad for the economy and I know that many people will break their bones. But above that isn’t it great that the whole country is on its head. Schools are closed, roads are delayed. Many people can enjoy this time and can play in the snow. I think people should see it as a natural forced vacation! Off course it is giving lots of trouble but if we all be careful and help each other it can be really fun. I love snow!

British scientists crack killer cancer
Blog 7
Summary:
For the first time scientist have a complete genetic code for two common forms of cancer, long and skin cancer. This major breakthrough could open a new era in the treatment of cancer. All mutations in lung and skin tumours have been revealed. Due to new DNA sequencing technologies, scientists are able to decode the genome of the tumours and now they can see how the cancer has developed. They found 23,000 mutations in each long cancer cel and 33,000 in each skin cancer cel, knowing which mutations are important should lead to better treatment. In the future scientist hope that this technique will indentifie other forms of cancer as well.
Reaction:
This is absulutly great news! I hope that they will soon have similair insights in other forms of cancer. I think this major progress gives a lot of people hope to cure their cancer. I have red that if an avarage long cancer patience has smoked 18.000 packets of cigarettes that would mean that every 15 cigarretts caused one mutation. I think this is very usefull information for lots of people who are smoking. Unfortunatly it confirmed also that skin cancers are caused by long term exposure to the sun. It was a very interesting article to read.

Queen warns media over paparazzi pictures of royals
blog 6
summary:
The Royal family has always had an uneasy relationship with the paparazzi. There is a growing frustration about intrusion into the private lives of the royals and their friends. The queen has warned newspapers not to publish private pictures of the Royal Family.. From now on lawyers can take legal action against “intrusive and unacceptable” behavior of freelance cameramen. There are several reasons for the warning of the queen. Lately there were photographs of Prince Edward hitting his dog and young royals “falling out of nightclubs”. Also William was concerned after his girlfriend Kate Middleton hounded by the paparazzi in 2007 her treatment has parallels with that off princes Diana. The new rules will be tested this month when the queen enjoys her Christmas break. Anti-monarchist group Republic is not satisfied they said photographs involving issues over animal cruelty and inappropriate behavior of young royalties should be published.
Reaction:
I think we all know that the British Royals has always been a target for the paparazzi. I have seen many documentaries about princess Diana and the way her life was affected by the press and if the queen is not doing anything about this. Kate Middleton will also become an obsession for the press. I think it is a good decision. I think it is not necessarily relevant that the people in the UK can see the inappropriate pictures. It is maybe not good behavior. But people of the Royal family are humans and everyone make mistakes.
